Traditional Cypriot craft of basket making

Went to a house earlier on this week to watch the very local craft of basket making in action. Sticking out of the south Coast of Cyprus is Akritiri, one of the few Cypriot villages to lie within a British Sovereign Base. Known as the foot of Cyprus, this piece of land used to be an island. It now consists of mainly a very dry salt lake and a British RAF base, but despite living on British soil (British law applies here) this basket weaver and her husband could not speak any English (unusual on Cyprus as it is). She whipped up this basket in about an hour using reeds and grasses from the surrounding wetlands and marshes.
Not suprisingly, the skills are not being passed on to younger generations and the tourists shops are stocking t-shirts and fake designer hand bags instead of supporting local crafts. I think after we left laden down with more baskets than we knew what to do with, she probably went inside and switched on Sky TV.....

Easter in Cyprus

How to light a bonfire the Cypriot way:
1) Tell all firemen to take the night off. It is Easter after all
2) Pour a large amount of petrol onto a large pile of wood
3) Pour a line of petrol out from the wood
4) Set light to line of petrol:

5) Run very fast in the opposite direction:

6) Come back when the flames reduce down to 30 feet high:

7) Give your 5 year old child a firework to let off so that they feel part of the celebrations

8) Happy Easter!!!!

Sketch to Paint - Madame Butterfly

I was sitting outside in the sunshine drawing the Great Wall of Lemba. As I was drawing this statue, a butterfly landed on its nose and suddenly the statue seemed to come to life. Like the real Madame Butterfly, she is patiently waiting unable to leave her world, although here she is enjoying basking in the sunshine, smiling at the world and appreciating the wildlife all around while she waits. I thought it would make a perfect painting....
